Worktop Template and Fitting Checklist

A smooth installation starts before we arrive. Whether you’re having quartz worktops or granite worktops fitted, a little preparation helps us template accurately and install on time.

What is a templating visit?

This is the stage we confirm final measurements and details before manufacturing your stone worktop. Our in-house team will evaluate and measure the following during their visit:

  • Where joints will sit (if needed)

  • Cut-outs for sinks and hobs

  • Tap holes and accessory positions

  • Upstands and splashbacks

  • Edge profile choice and corner radiuses

Getting these details right at this stage helps avoid last-minute changes, delays, or re-visits.

Before your visit

1) Make sure the kitchen is ready to measure

For accurate results, the cabinets and surrounding finishes need to be finalised:

  • All kitchen base units are installed and fixed in their final position

  • Units are level (this affects the finished fit and joint alignment)

  • End panels are fitted

  • Any boxing-in around pipes/cables is complete

  • Plastering is complete where applicable

If you are between trades, it’s usually best to wait until the above is done rather than template too early.

2) Have the items we need to template cut-outs properly

To confirm sink and hob cut-outs (and confirm clearances), it’s best to have the actual appliances on site.

Aim to have:

  • Sink, hob and any other relevant appliances on site and, where possible, fixed in place

  • Any accessories that affect drilling or positions

If something cannot be fitted yet, please speak to our team so we can help advise.

3) Fit wall units and extractors if you’re having upstands or splashbacks

If we are templating upstands and splashbacks, wall items can affect the final sizes.

  • Wall units and extractors should be fitted so upstands/splashbacks can be accurately measured.

4) Remove temporary worktops (if you have them)

If there are temporary tops in place, these should be removed so we can template to the cabinets and walls correctly.

5) Have a decision maker on site

This visit often involves quick, practical decisions. Please ensure a decision maker is present so we can confirm details like edge profiles, corner radiuses, and drainer positions without delays.

Quick “decisions to make” list

To keep your visit simple, it helps to decide these in advance:

  • Material and thickness

  • Edge profile

  • Sink type and exact position

  • Hob position

  • Tap hole(s) and any extras

  • Drainer grooves (yes/no, and which side)

  • Upstands/splashbacks (height, runs, and whether behind hob)

  • Any additional features

Before your fitting (installation) visit

1) Keep access clear and practical

Stone worktops are heavy and need safe movement into the property.

Please ensure:

  • Access to the property is clear and unobstructed

  • The installation area is cleared (worktops, breakables, small appliances)

  • Parking/loading is as close as possible if available

2) Do not book other trades in the same space

Please avoid having other workers booked in the installation room/area during fitting

This helps prevent delays and protects fresh plaster, cabinetry, and the stone itself.

3) Plan for joints and cabinet supports

Some layouts require joints. Where joints are planned, we may need additional internal support in the units. This can be discussed at template stage.

4) Sort plumbing/electrics around the installation

Depending on your setup, you may need your plumber/electrician to:

  • Disconnect appliances ahead of time (if required)

  • Reconnect after the worktops are installed

If you’re unsure what should be disconnected, speak to us and our team will be happy to advise.

Changing your appointment

If you need to postpone a templating or fitting visit, we request a minimum of 24 hours’ notice.

FAQ

Do I need my sink and hob on site?

It’s strongly recommended. Having the actual sink/hob on site reduces the risk of mismatched cut-outs and makes it easier to agree final positioning.

Can you template before plastering or boxing-in is finished?

It’s not ideal. Final wall finishes and boxing can change where the worktop needs to sit, which can affect accuracy and lead to rework.

Why do the cabinets need to be level?

Stone is rigid. If cabinets aren’t level, it can create uneven contact points, visible gaps, or stress in the stone.

How can I make fitting day go smoothly?

Clear the space, keep access easy, and avoid booking other trades in the room. Decisions made at this stage also prevent delays.

What happens if the kitchen isn’t ready?

If we arrive and the required conditions haven’t been met, it may mean we’re unable to complete templating or fitting in one visit.

The existing page notes that if an additional visit is required, additional work may be charged at £20 + VAT per hour (including travel time) plus mileage at £0.45 + VAT per mile. It also notes this may delay installation dates.
